TopicsWe've created a series of Quick Reference Guides on popular topics to help you more easily find the information you need. We don't have everything covered here but it's a good start. We hope to create more so if you have a particular topic you'd like to see, drop us a line. Planting Fruit TreesPlant fruit trees so they get at least 6–8 hours of sun, preferably in the afternoon. A south and west exposure is best. Basic Fruit Tree Care
Grow healthy trees & more fruit with these simple steps! Pruning Fruit TreesIn addition to improving the tree’s appearance, pruning a fruit tree increases light penetration and thus improves fruit quality. Apple Maggot FlyHealthy trees are more resistant to pests. Keep the fruit tree well pruned, watered and mulched. Codling MothBags are more effective than footies in protecting against codling moth. If bags are in place at the right time, and if all unbagged fruit is removed, they are highly effective against codling moths. Pear ScabReduce the liklihood of having to deal with pear scab by planting resistant varieties, such as ‘Bartlett’. Fruit Drying BasicsThe goal is to remove water, which slows the deterioration process. Once dried, food continues to deteriorate at a very slow rate. If not enough water is removed, the food spoils; if too much water is removed, you get hard, brittle food or ‘chips’. |
