Hard Cider: From Orchard To Shelf
US Hard Cider Sales grew 101% in 2013 to over 128 million dollars. There are currently not enough hard cider apples (bittersweet, bittersharp, heirloom) and perry pears grown in the United States to meet demand. What better place to look for new cider fruit orchards than in Eastern Washington? It’s an opportunity for diversification in a fast growing market.
This one day workshop provides an overview of the hard cider business from orchard management to product development and marketing. Expert orchardist Gary Moulton will discuss topics on rootstock, nutrient management, pest management, irrigation, orchard layout, planting, pruning and harvesting techniques. Industry professionals will share information on selecting the right apple varieties, what it takes to establish and maintain an orchard, mechanical harvesting and how growing cider fruit can fit profitably into business plans. Hard Cider production, economics, risk management and marketing will also be discussed.
